Cloudflare has announced early access to a new service called Vulnerability Discovery and Remediation, now integrated into Cloudflare Managed Defense. This invitation-only offering is designed to help customers identify and address security weaknesses within their codebases using a context-aware approach. The announcement highlights the growing challenge of prioritizing security fixes, as modern tools can uncover thousands of vulnerabilities, making it difficult for teams to determine what to fix first.
The service leverages the OpenAI Daybreak Defense Network, incorporating models like GPT-5.6 Cyber for tasks such as reconnaissance and vulnerability validation. Crucially, the process is automated for efficiency but remains under customer control; Cloudflare will propose code patches and mitigations, but the customer decides whether to implement them. This addresses a critical pain point where security teams are overwhelmed by the volume of findings.
Cloudflare emphasizes that its unique global network provides essential context that traditional scanners lack. The service doesn't just flag a vulnerability in a code handler; it analyzes whether that code is deployed, the volume of traffic it receives, and any recent security events or existing protections. This context transforms a generic finding into a prioritized, actionable item. For example, a vulnerability can be flagged as critical if it resides in heavily trafficked code with recent attack activity and no current mitigation.
The underlying technology builds upon Cloudflare's internal model-agnostic vulnerability scanning pipeline, previously described in a blog post titled "Build your own vulnerability harness." That system, used to secure Cloudflare's own fleet, has now been adapted to scan customer-authorized codebases and connect findings to real-world production data.
The process involves first collecting a snapshot of traffic and security data from the customer's Web Assets and Web Application Firewall (WAF). This data reveals active routes and associated security triggers. Then, source code analysis identifies potential weaknesses, but the service correlates these technical flaws with the operational context gathered from the network edge.
Cloudflare positions this service as a direct response to the accelerating threat landscape, where attackers also use AI to speed up exploitation. By providing context-rich analysis and automated remediation proposals, Vulnerability Discovery and Remediation aims to shift the advantage back to defenders, enabling faster and more informed decision-making. The service is currently available via an early access invitation program.
