ByteDance's virtual reality brand, Pico, has recently obtained market access certification from the U.S. Federal Communications Commission (FCC) for its new headset device, marking a crucial step toward the global release of this highly anticipated product. According to a report by IT Home on September 6, the device is widely believed to be the previously hyped but delayed Pico Space Pro. The headset was originally planned for release on September 2, but was ultimately postponed to the fourth quarter of 2024.

Before its launch, Pico Space Pro has already revealed some core information, aiming to "lightly ignite a new spatial experience." A notable feature of the product is its external modular design, which comes with controllers that include tracking capabilities. External analysis points out that the specific functions of the external modules have not been fully disclosed yet, and may include a detachable battery pack to extend battery life, or a separate computing unit to offload processing tasks from the headset itself.

In terms of hardware configuration, the Pico Space Pro demonstrates a significant performance leap. According to official pre-launch information, the headset will feature a high-resolution micro-OLED display panel with a pixel density of up to 4,000 pixels per inch (4,000 PPI), aiming to provide an extremely detailed visual experience. Simultaneously, it adopts an advanced dual-chip processing architecture, with one being a self-developed coprocessor specifically optimized for computer vision and image processing tasks.

The core of the performance improvement lies in its main processor. Pico states that the performance of the central processing unit (CPU) and graphics processing unit (GPU) of this main processor will reach twice that of the Qualcomm Snapdragon XR2 Gen 2 platform, which is currently widely used in mainstream headsets like the Pico 4 Ultra and Meta Quest 3. If this claim holds true, it will bring a qualitative leap in graphics rendering, application processing, and interaction smoothness.

Obtaining FCC certification is a legally necessary procedure for this device to be sold in the U.S. and North American markets. The leakage of certification information further confirms that the Pico Space Pro has not been canceled but is progressing according to plan in its launch process. Combined with the originally scheduled fourth-quarter release window, the industry expects Pico to officially announce the detailed specifications and pricing of the product in the coming months.

For Pico, the launch of the Space Pro is a key move to address fierce market competition and refresh its high-end product line. Against the backdrop of Meta continuing to dominate market share with the Quest series, Pico needs to establish differentiation advantages in display effects, processing performance, and innovative design to attract core VR enthusiasts and enterprise users. The final market performance of this headset will directly impact Pico's position in the global XR (extended reality) market.

From an industry perspective, the high specifications of the Pico Space Pro, particularly its claimed doubling of chip performance, signal that the performance race for standalone VR headsets is entering a new phase. If these improvements can translate into tangible enhancements in user experience, such as more complex virtual scenes, more realistic interactions, and longer continuous usage times, it is expected to drive the entire consumer VR market toward higher-quality applications and stimulate content developers to create more immersive experiences.
