The open source Android app store F-Droid is considering emulating the recently adopted generative AI use policy of the Debian community. The core principle of this policy is to allow the responsible use of AI in the development workflow, but with final responsibility resting with human contributors. This move marks the open source community's effort to clarify responsibility boundaries while embracing new technological tools.

Previously, the Debian community held a crucial vote on the use of large language models. The vote offered multiple options ranging from a complete ban to allowing conditional use. Ultimately, Option 5, "Responsible use of generative AI," prevailed through the Condorcet voting system. According to this policy, AI-generated code and documentation must meet quality and legal requirements, and contributors are not forced to disclose whether they used AI, although official disclosure is encouraged.

The proposed policy submitted by the F-Droid community directly references Debian's policy text, only replacing the organization name. The proposal states that generative AI can be used in multiple stages of software development, maintenance, packaging, and documentation writing, and developers must maintain a responsible attitude toward this. The entity responsible remains the human developer, not the AI tool itself.

This development reflects common concerns among open source projects in response to the proliferation of AI tools. How to balance efficiency improvements with quality control and clarify the ultimate responsibility of developers has become a key issue that communities need to address. F-Droid's initiative may influence other similar open source collaborative projects.

Currently, this policy proposal is in the community discussion phase. If adopted, it will provide clear AI usage guidelines for F-Droid contributors. Analysis suggests that this will help maintain code quality and legal compliance in open source projects while embracing productivity tools.
