Mistral AI has raised €3 billion in a Series D round, marking the largest equity funding round any European tech company has ever raised, according to the company. The three-year-old French startup's valuation now exceeds €21 billion, roughly double its previous worth. Samsung Electronics leads the investment, with Scaleup Europe Fund and PSG Equity joining as co-leads.

New investors include Advent, funds managed by BlackRock, and the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg. Existing backers such as a16z, Nvidia, ASML, and General Catalyst also participated. The round follows ASML's €1.3 billion investment in September 2025, when Mistral was valued at about €12 billion. In March, the company also took out an $830 million loan to fund its own data centers.

Despite the massive capital influx, Mistral's models are not top performers. Its Mistral Medium 3.5 trails Chinese open models like Qwen and Kimi, and does not compete with closed US models at all. Instead, the company leans heavily into enterprise customers.

Mistral operates in 20 countries and serves more than 125 companies, including Airbus, ASML, and HSBC. Since early 2026, it has benefited significantly from European customers looking to cut their reliance on US providers. This enterprise focus differentiates Mistral from consumer-oriented AI rivals.

The funding round highlights growing investor confidence in European AI independence. It also signals that capital can flow to companies that prioritize business applications over benchmark leadership. The participation of major global investors like Samsung and BlackRock adds credibility to Mistral's strategy.

Looking ahead, Mistral plans to use the new capital to expand its data center infrastructure and enterprise offerings. The company aims to solidify its position as Europe's leading AI champion. With continued support from private investors and state-backed entities, Mistral is poised for further growth despite competitive pressures.
