Audi has unveiled the A2 E-tron, a compact crossover it calls its most affordable and efficient electric vehicle yet. The model starts at £32,200, about $45,000, and can be configured to deliver up to 401 miles on the European WLTP cycle. However, the rear-wheel-drive EV is intended for Europe only, with no immediate plans for North America.

The launch tackles a common EV tradeoff, where affordable models often have limited range and long-range models carry premium prices. Audi says the A2 splits that difference by pairing an accessible entry price with class-leading efficiency. The crossover also sets a new Audi record with a drag coefficient of 0.24.

To achieve that figure, Audi used flush door handles, cool air intakes, a fully enclosed underbody, and gap reducers around the wheel arches. The A2 introduces bidirectional charging as an Audi first, enabling vehicle-to-load through a trunk outlet and vehicle-to-home with a compatible DC wall box. In its most efficient configuration, the car consumes just 12.8 kWh per 62 miles.

Inside, the A2 E-tron has a curved MMI panoramic display combining an 11.9-inch digital gauge cluster with a 12.8-inch center touchscreen. Audi also added a Fidlock magnetic fastening system, letting owners attach cupholders and charging cable bags at dedicated points in the cabin and trunk. The company says this is the first production-car use of the technology.

The model's affordability and efficiency could pressure rivals in Europe's compact EV segment. Yet its absence from North America means U.S. buyers will not immediately benefit. Audi's focus on Europe reflects stronger demand for small, efficient EVs and stricter emissions targets there.

Audi abandoned its all-electric pledge last year and now plans a mix of gasoline, hybrid, and electric powertrains. The A2 E-tron may not reach showrooms alongside models like the S6 Sportback E-tron soon, but Audi has not ruled out future expansion. For now, European customers get first access to one of the most compelling affordable EVs on the market.
