On September 11, OpenAI announced that due to unprecedented demand for the GPT-6 Astra model, it would suspend accepting new subscribers for the Pro 20X plan at the $200-per-month tier. This move aims to prioritize the access experience of existing users and ensure they can smoothly use the new generation of AI models. As of the time of writing, this tier is no longer selectable on the official website, and the Pro subscription only retains the $100-per-month 5X tier.

The decision was first announced by OpenAI's Chief Product Officer, Tibo, on social media platform X. He explained that Pro subscribers consume the most system resources, and suspending new subscriptions is the 'least impactful approach' to expand access as much as possible under limited computing power. OpenAI had previously warned that it would suspend new Pro subscriptions if necessary, and now this measure has officially taken effect.

According to official statements, this adjustment only affects new subscriptions to the $200 Pro plan; existing accounts with ChatGPT subscriptions are not affected. At the same time, OpenAI's other subscription tiers and API services for developers remain open, and enterprise customers and developers can continue to use related services.

In terms of pricing, the $200 tier is approximately 1,345 yuan at the current exchange rate, and is a top-tier service launched by OpenAI for high-end individual users. This tier provides 20 times the model call quota, mainly aimed at researchers, analysts, and professional creators who use AI frequently. After the suspension of new subscriptions, new users can only choose the $100 5X tier, with a significantly reduced call quota.

Industry insiders believe that this move reflects that the popularity of GPT-6 Astra has exceeded OpenAI's computing capacity expectations. As the latest flagship model, GPT-6 Astra has significantly improved reasoning capabilities and multimodal performance. After its release, it quickly attracted a global influx of users, causing a surge in system pressure.

For users, the threshold for obtaining high-end subscriptions has risen in the short term, and some potential users may need to wait longer to experience the 20X service. However, OpenAI stated that it is increasing capacity as quickly as possible and hopes to reopen subscription channels for this tier in the future.

Analysts pointed out that this incident also reflects the universal computing power bottleneck facing the AI industry. As model scales continue to expand, how to balance commercial expansion and service quality will become a challenge that OpenAI and other AI companies must continuously address.
