Boston Dynamics has inaugurated a dedicated training center for its Atlas humanoid robot at Hyundai's massive new electric vehicle manufacturing complex in Georgia. The Robotics Metaplant Application Center, or RMAC, is located at the Hyundai Motor Group Metaplant America facility near Savannah. This new hub is specifically designed to train and test Atlas robots within a real-world automotive production environment.

The facility represents a significant step in Hyundai's plan to integrate advanced robotics into its manufacturing workflow. Atlas robots at RMAC are initially learning complex logistics tasks, such as sequencing and preparing parts for assembly lines. By 2030, the training curriculum is expected to evolve to include direct component assembly and other physically demanding jobs.

Hyundai's ambitions for Atlas are extensive. The automaker plans to deploy a fleet of 25,000 Atlas robots across its global Hyundai Motor and Kia plants within the next few years. To support this rollout, Boston Dynamics and Hyundai will establish a U.S. production facility capable of manufacturing 30,000 robots annually.

Zack Jackowski, Boston Dynamics' chief product and technology officer, emphasized the partnership's pioneering nature. He stated the companies are 'pioneering physical AI at enterprise scale' with a clear strategy to optimize the entire lifecycle of the Atlas robots, from supply chain to deployment. The goal is to create robots that make work safer and more productive.

The current RMAC is the first phase of a much larger plan. Boston Dynamics intends to move operations into a new building at the Georgia complex by 2027. This future facility will be approximately ten times the size of the current center.

Looking beyond the automotive sector, Boston Dynamics will begin exploring Atlas applications in other industries next year. The company is in discussions with current customers to expand into manufacturing, aerospace, semiconductors, logistics, food and beverage, and life sciences. Data collection and training for these diverse environments are slated to accelerate in 2027, signaling a broad future for humanoid automation.
