Meta on Thursday launched Muse Spark Open, an open-weight AI model it claims rivals leading Chinese developers. The company said it is "the most capable US open-weight model to date." Alexandr Wang, Meta's chief of AI, announced the release on X.

Unlike closed models like Anthropic's Claude or OpenAI's ChatGPT, open-weight models allow developers to download and modify parameters. Chinese developers have dominated the open-weight market with Alibaba's Qwen, Moonshot AI's Kimi K3, and Z.ai's GLM. Meta now claims its new model competes on a similar level.

Muse Spark Open is "built for coding and agentic work," Meta said in a blogpost. It "excels at long-horizon tasks, complex software engineering, and multi-step reasoning." The model includes "strong safeguards," according to Meta.

The model is optimized to run on Apple's advanced M5 Ultra chips, signaling an unusual partnership. Users can run it on two Mac Studios with M5 Ultra chips to create a "supercomputer" on their desktop. This requires significant computing power.

The launch comes days after Meta announced its newest closed model, which it said rivaled advanced versions of ChatGPT and Claude. Meta's AI efforts initially focused on open models, but CEO Mark Zuckerberg has pushed to compete with OpenAI and Anthropic. This dual strategy highlights Meta's ambition.

Wang wrote on X that Muse Spark Open outperforms similar products from leading Chinese developers in some cases. Meta's blogpost emphasized its capabilities for complex tasks. The partnership with Apple marks a notable shift.

The release could intensify competition in the open-weight AI market. Meta's move may challenge Chinese dominance and influence future AI development. It remains to be seen how rivals will respond.
