Argus, a free and open-source MIT-licensed security operations platform, has launched to counter AI-driven attacks. It continuously watches cloud services, logins, code and devices, detects intrusions as they begin, and can shut them down in seconds. The platform pairs autonomous investigation with broker-mediated guardrails that keep humans in control of production changes.
Traditional tools were built for human-paced threats, but attackers now use AI agents to probe many systems at once. A stolen key can fire sixty probing calls across twenty cloud services before an analyst reads the first alert. Swarms of fake identities can spray passwords at admin accounts from a hundred locations simultaneously.
Argus cites a 2:14 a.m. incident to show its speed. An attacker’s agent finds what appears to be an LLM API key, actually a canary; at 02:14:08 Argus raises a high-severity detection, and at 02:14:09 a playbook blocks the source at Cloudflare within an hourly cap. Slack alerts arrive at 02:14:10 with a one-tap rollback button, and by 07:30 the team reviews a closed incident and signed audit record.
Autonomous response and pentesting ship switched off, requiring both a deployment switch and a per-tenant opt-in. Playbooks start in shadow mode, run only reversible actions, and roll back automatically unless kept. Hourly limits, blast-radius caps, two human approvals for high-risk actions and a kill switch constrain every change.
The design aims to make machine-speed defense trustworthy for production systems. AI agents never touch systems directly: they investigate read-only and can only propose changes. Every action—human-requested, agent-suggested or playbook-triggered—passes through the same broker.
Argus also inventories staff AI use and replays eight agent attacks in a sandbox. Its guardrails are meant to make autonomy reversible, capped and auditable. The open-source release gives defenders machine-speed tools for an AI-era threat landscape.
