Elon Musk’s AI company Grok has released the first seven minutes of its AI-generated “Odyssey,” calling the clip “Episode 1 of our Odyssey series.” The release came three months after Musk promised a full-length, “historically accurate” movie version. The project is a collaboration with Wonder Studios and director Dev Walker.
Musk had publicly criticized Christopher Nolan’s adaptation, objecting to Nolan’s casting of nonwhite and transgender actors. Nolan has described himself as “a techno-skeptic” and said that before AI he had never seen a technology “so completely rejected by the public.” His “Odyssey” was shot across six countries with thousands of cast and crew and was released in July.
Nolan’s film became a major box-office success, selling out Imax screenings for months and emerging as a likely front-runner at the next Academy Awards. The Grok version, by contrast, offers only seven minutes so far. The clip uses a British-accented narrator and dialogue that does not include ancient Greek.
Reviewers described the footage as less visually ugly than expected and more impressive than some recent Musk posts. Some individual shots could resemble real actors at sea, but the clip was said to lack artistry, inspiration and human interest. The voiceover reportedly runs long before giving way to bearded faces and stilted lines.
The review said the clip felt “completely airless,” with no momentum and no reason to care about anyone on screen. It noted that the nearly three-hour Nolan film held attention, while the Grok clip prompted time-checking before halfway. If it were a video-game cutscene, the reviewer said, the “skip” button would have been pressed.
It remains unclear when Grok will release more episodes or a full movie. The excerpt has intensified debate over AI-generated filmmaking and Musk’s accuracy claims. The contrast with Nolan’s practical production is likely to remain central.
