Switzerland’s first retail spot Bitcoin exchange-traded fund is set to launch in November after regulatory approval. BIT Asset Management’s Bitcoin Fund ETF, BBIT, is expected to begin trading on the SIX Swiss Exchange next month. Its public offering is restricted to Switzerland.

FINMA announced Tuesday it had approved the country’s first spot Bitcoin ETF investing directly in Bitcoin without disclosing the issuer. On Thursday, BIT Asset Management identified itself as the provider. The fund holds Bitcoin directly and is approved for Swiss public offering only.

BIT said most bitcoin products listed in Europe today are exchange-traded products, or ETPs, which are debt instruments that carry issuer risk. The Bitcoin Fund ETF is instead a Swiss collective investment scheme. Its assets are held separately from those of the fund management company and are ring-fenced for investors.

The fund falls under Switzerland’s “other funds for alternative investments” category with particular risk. Since 2021, FINMA has allowed funds investing primarily in a basket of cryptocurrencies. This is its first approval of a fund investing only in Bitcoin, citing trading history and higher volume than other cryptocurrencies.

FINMA noted that other fund providers have also submitted applications for Bitcoin ETFs. It stressed that Bitcoin remains highly volatile even when accessed through an approved ETF. The regulator’s approval therefore does not remove market risk for retail investors.

Direct Bitcoin exposure inside a regulated Swiss fund could appeal to retail investors wary of ETP issuer risk. The ring-fenced structure may differentiate BBIT from debt-based products elsewhere in Europe. A SIX listing gives Swiss investors access through a familiar exchange.

BBIT is expected to begin trading in November. More applications suggest Switzerland’s crypto ETF market may expand. The launch will test demand for regulated spot Bitcoin exposure as regulators emphasize volatility.
