Instagram head Adam Mosseri warned that public frustration with artificial intelligence will intensify over the next couple of years. Speaking on the Colin and Samir podcast, Mosseri said negativity around AI is “going to continue to get worse.” He made the remarks while discussing Instagram’s launch of widescreen and long-form video.
Mosseri said the anxiety extends beyond young people and creative workers. He described a trend of “more anxiety and more frustration and more anger about AI,” especially in creative industries. He added that some concerns are founded and some unfounded, but the tension will make life difficult for many people.
The Instagram chief linked the backlash to a broader fear of being left behind. In a candid exchange, he said people worry about content ownership, models training on their work, safety, and job displacement. Those fears affect creators, engineers, and mathematicians alike, he said.
Mosseri also addressed how Instagram treats AI-generated content. He claimed the platform does not rank AI creators differently, but questioned whether AI posts match non-AI quality. “There’s a lot of great AI content out there, there’s also a lot of AI slop,” he said, while arguing the term “slop” is used too liberally.
Instagram has begun requiring AI accounts to label themselves, and it started cracking down on AI-generated profiles in August after launching an AI label earlier this year. Mosseri said misleading content such as celebrity deepfakes remains a problem. Still, he said banning AI content outright is not practical.
The comments underscore a widening challenge for social platforms as AI tools spread. Mosseri’s outlook suggests tensions over authenticity, attribution, and economic disruption will keep growing. Instagram’s response—labeling, enforcement, and ranking adjustments—will face scrutiny from creators and users alike.
