Apple has officially entered the touchscreen MacBook Pro era with a new lineup starting at $2,899. The company is positioning the machines as premium professional devices. Preorders open October 30 and availability begins November 6.

The launch marks a major shift nearly a decade after Apple first experimented with Touch Bar. Apple eventually abandoned the feature. Now it embraces touchscreen on MacBook Pro for the first time.

Configuration prices reach $14,249 for a fully loaded 14-inch and $14,549 for the 16-inch. Both use the M5 Max chip with an 18-core CPU and 40-core GPU. These are top-tier specs.

Upgrade costs drive totals sharply higher. A 4TB SSD adds $1,000; 8TB adds $3,000; the new 16TB option adds $7,000. 128GB memory costs another $2,000, while nano-texture glass adds $150.

For perspective, the previous 16-inch MacBook Pro topped out at $10,149. The new model raises that ceiling by $4,400. The gap highlights how quickly high-end configuration costs have climbed.

Apple faces pressure from an ongoing memory shortage and AI's seemingly endless appetite for hardware. Those factors help explain some pricing pressure. The maxed-out cost places the laptop among the most expensive mainstream portable computers.

The pricing drew immediate attention as absurd even as Apple touted the touchscreen shift. The move signals Apple's willingness to test premium features on professional users. It also risks widening the divide between standard and maxed-out buyers.

The launch could shape future MacBook design and pricing. If touchscreen models gain traction, Apple may expand the feature across the lineup. For now, the $14,549 ceiling sets a new benchmark for overall laptop pricing extremes.
