Perplexity has launched Teammates, a new set of always-on AI agents designed for workplace collaboration. The startup’s offering directly challenges OpenAI and Anthropic in the growing market for work-focused AI agents. Teammates can take on multiple roles within a workspace while running continuously.

The new agents build on Perplexity Computer, an AI system that can deploy agents on a user’s device to complete tasks. According to Perplexity, Teammates “build on top” of Computer by enabling collaboration and support for “ongoing, large-scale work.” They also pull existing projects, skills, and memory from Perplexity tools that users already rely on.

Users can assign each Teammate different jobs that they perform simultaneously, much like OpenAI’s Dots and Claude Duet. Perplexity says Teammates operate 24/7, making them suited for persistent workflows. The feature, however, requires a subscription to Perplexity’s Max plan, which costs $200 per month.

The launch carries significant implications for the AI agent race, as Perplexity moves beyond search into workplace automation. Users can monitor Teammates’ progress through individual threads in the Perplexity app. They can also interact with the agents in Slack, according to the company.

Perplexity CEO Aravind Srinivas framed the ambition broadly on X. “Over time, we envision every org having hundreds of teammates working for each person,” he said. The comment underscores Perplexity’s bet that always-on agents will become a standard part of organizational work.

The launch signals intensifying competition among AI startups and major technology companies over the future of workplace productivity. Perplexity’s $200 monthly price point may test how much businesses are willing to pay for persistent AI agents. How quickly organizations adopt Teammates will likely shape the next phase of the AI agent market.
