OpenAI has reportedly raised $11 billion in a new funding round that values the artificial intelligence lab at $1.25 trillion. Bloomberg reported the funding on Friday, citing people familiar with the matter. The money is part of a larger round that has not yet closed, according to the outlet.
Bloomberg reported that the round is expected to close in the coming weeks and could total about $20 billion, a source said. That figure would remain below OpenAI’s earlier target. In late September, Bloomberg reported that OpenAI was seeking $30 billion in the round.
TechCrunch said it had contacted OpenAI for comment and would update its story if the company responded. The reported valuation underscores OpenAI’s central position in the generative AI market. It also comes as investors assess the sector’s soaring private valuations and uncertain public-market appetite.
The news arrived hours after Bloomberg reported that potential buyers of shares in Anthropic’s IPO were eyeing a much lower valuation than the company had targeted. Some buyers believe Anthropic’s valuation could be as low as $1.1 trillion, Bloomberg wrote. Investors had expected roughly $2 trillion about a month earlier.
OpenAI had previously signaled that it would go public this year but later delayed those plans. Expectations now point to a possible IPO next year. The company has not confirmed a timeline.
The AI market remains precarious. A Democratic landslide in the U.S. midterms and overwhelmingly negative voter sentiment around data centers have caused jitters across the sector. Many participants anticipate potential regulatory challenges ahead.
The funding round’s final size and close date will be watched closely by investors and competitors. OpenAI’s reported raise, alongside Anthropic’s valuation questions, may shape expectations for AI companies seeking capital. The coming weeks could clarify how much appetite remains for the sector’s largest private deals.
